Marmet, WV (WOAY) A Kanawha County man is facing charges following a high-speed pursuit that began in Marmet and ended on Interstate 77.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to stop a GMC vehicle after observing it run a red light near the I-77 exit ramp and Route 94.
Investigators say the driver, identified as Justin Richard Connard, initially pulled over but then fled from the scene.
During the pursuit, Connard allegedly drove recklessly through traffic, entered opposing lanes multiple times, struck a sheriff’s patrol vehicle, and reached speeds of more than 120 miles per hour.
The chase ended near the Kanawha City exit after the vehicle reportedly struck a guardrail.
Deputies, with assistance from the West Virginia State Police, took Connard into custody without further incident.
Authorities say Connard allegedly threw a bag containing suspected controlled substances from the vehicle during the pursuit. The substances have been submitted for testing.
Connard is charged with fleeing from law enforcement while under the influence and fleeing with reckless indifference to the safety of others.
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
