Wonderful weather through Wednesday, then unsettled into next week

It has been a MUCH nicer day today than it was yesterday around the region, with temperatures rising into the 60s after a chilly start. If you like today’s warmer weather, you’ll really like tomorrow as highs will rise into the middle to upper 70s for most of southern West Virginia! We’ll even threaten record highs in both Beckley (79 set in 2012) and Bluefield (80, also set in 2012). It should be a great day to take your lunch outdoors or to take a walk outside. The only downside to the nice weather is elevated fire danger, with humidity levels expected to be very low and winds breezy during the afternoon.
Beginning late tomorrow night, change is in the air as the first of multiple storm systems make their way into the area. This first storm will be packing a punch in areas to our northwest, but for our area, it will be a good chance for showers and not much else. Rainfall totals will not be high enough to cause anything other than ponding on some of the roads and perhaps a brief period of standing water in low-lying spots. Snow will mix in Thursday night and into Friday morning, but snowfall accumulations will be less than an inch or two in most areas.
After a brief break on Friday, the second storm will bring another chance for rain on Saturday. This second storm is the weakest of the three and chances for rain are fairly small with it. Any rain will be too light to do anything other than cause some delays to our outdoor plans. Yet another system will approach the area on Monday and this one will be closer in strength to the Thursday storm than the one on Saturday. The vast majority of precipitation with this storm will be in the wet form and rainfall totals will be as high as an inch in some isolated spots, once again enough to cause some nuisance standing water, but no major flooding. By Tuesday, however, snow will be falling in many areas as temperatures drop again in the morning hours.
Temperature-wise, the forecast over the next seven days calls for highs and lows to be close to the normal, nothing like the middle 70s that we saw last week, and will see again tomorrow.
