West Virginia small game hunting and trapping season enters final week

South Charleston, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is reminding hunters and trappers that the season wraps up on February 28, 2025.

According to a press release, the WVDNR says that hunting seasons including include squirrel, ruffed grouse, cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, raccoon, red and gray fox and bobcat are all coming to an end. Trapping seasons for raccoon, red and gray fox, bobcat, mink and muskrat, otter, skunk, opossum, coyote and weasel are also coming to a close.

If you trap and harvest a beaver, bobcat, fisher or otter you are required to electronically check animals within 30 days after the close of their respective seasons. A WVDNR-issued game check confirmation number must be noted in writing with the trapper’s name and address. You must attach it to each pelt or whole animal until sold, tanned, processed into commercial fur or mounted.

Trappers who harvest a radio-tagged otter are asked to contact Holly Morris at the District 4 office at 304-256-6947 to report the tag number and return the transmitter. Trappers who deliver a legally harvested and electronically registered skinned otter carcass to a WVDNR district office will be eligible to receive a $20 gift card.

Those aged 15 and older who wish to hunt and trap must have a valid West Virginia hunting license which can be purchased on WVhunt.com
