West Virginia establishes Prehospital Pediatric Readiness State Recognition Program

West Virginia (WOAY) West Virginia is taking another step toward improving emergency care for children.

The state Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services has met national performance criteria established by the Health Resources and Services Administration, allowing West Virginia to establish a statewide Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Recognition Program.

The program focuses on making sure EMS responders are educated, equipped, and prepared to meet the unique needs of pediatric patients.

Recognition requires a pediatric emergency care coordinator, a disaster plan addressing children’s needs, and at least one formally recognized EMS agency.

West Virginia already has a Hospital Pediatric Readiness Program in place, making it just the eighth state in the nation with both programs.
