Weekend Outlook: nice weather both days

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a pleasant Friday around the area as we’re getting a break after decent rain fell earlier in the week. Dry weather will dominate the first part of the weekend. A system approaching from the southwest on Saturday will try to throw some showers in our direction, but the chance for any rain will be very small, and any showers that do pop up will mainly be confined to the southern coalfields. I’m calling for only a 10% chance for rain, and if there is any rain, totals will be light. Temperatures will be pleasant. We’ll start the day on the cool side thanks to the dry air in place, allowing us to drop into the upper 40s and lower 50s. By the afternoon, highs will be in the middle to upper 70s.

Sunday will almost be a carbon copy of Saturday, with a cool start to the day giving way to a nice afternoon. The only difference is that the chance for showers on Saturday – slight as it may be – is nowhere in the forecast during the morning and afternoon on Sunday. The second half of the weekend should be totally dry.

While it’s great for the outdoor plans and various festivals that are happening, it’s not good for our drought situation, which is still bad. Most areas are still in severe drought, and while this week’s rain will help once it’s counted (as a reminder, there is a lag in when precipitation makes it to the water table to be counted by the drought monitor. For example, the data used in the drought monitor was collected this past Monday, meaning that the rain we saw on Tuesday and Wednesday won’t be counted until next week); we still need more.

The next chance for rain will begin Sunday night and last through Monday as another front moves into the area.
