Latest weather information from Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill’s Facebook Live at 5 a.m., Sunday, February 16, 2025:
A developing historical flooding event unraveling in southern West Virginia will continue, but we will add howling winds, snow and a flash freeze on Sunday. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:
TIMELINE:
THROUGH 5 AM: Occasional bursts of rain in the southern coalfields will add to the flooding and ALL rivers, creeks and streams will continue to flood. Mudslides and more road closures expected.
AFTER 4 AM: Southerly wind picks up behind the warm front and constant wind of 10-20 mph and gusts to 25 mph will trigger at least scattered outages (more widespread in the southern coalfields).
7 AM TO 1 PM: Cold front pushes through. Widespread gusts 35-45 mph will trigger widespread power outages. MAKE SURE YOUR BACKUP GENERATOR IS READY TO GO! Another 1″ of rain will add to the record flooding across the region. A line of gusty storms is even looking likely but EVEN IF THERE ARE NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS, we highly believe the rain and wind will come at once with the front.
1 PM SUNDAY TO 10 AM MONDAY: Bursts of heavy snow are expected. 1″ west of Route 19, 1-2″ along Route 19 and I-77 to 4-6″ in western Greenbrier and Pocahontas County. A LOT OF STANDING WATER WILL FREEZE AFTER DARK. ROAD CREWS WILL LIKELY NOT GET A CHANCE TO TREAT ROADS WITH SALT BEFOREHAND BECAUSE OF THE FLOODING, SO USE EXTREME CAUTION IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE.
