Unsettled weather over the next week

It has been a nice day around southern West Virginia, with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures were not quite as warm as they were at this time yesterday, but are still close to the normal.
The winds are not as strong as they have been, so it actually felt pleasant to be outside. Tonight, the clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall into the mid to upper 30s.
Tomorrow will start nicely enough, with mostly sunny skies. A southwesterly flow will even drive temperatures into the mid-60s. The downside will be that the winds will be gusty, especially during the afternoon. But as the day goes on, a front will push into the region, and this will bring with it a chance for showers. Isolated storms are possible, and some of these could even be on the strong side.
A few of the storms, primarily in the areas just off to our west, will have damaging winds with them. The Storm Prediction Center has even placed areas just to our west in the Level 1 “Marginal Risk” for severe storms.
Even if the winds are not strong enough to reach severe criteria, they’ll be plenty gusty as the line pushes through. For now, it looks like we won’t have a perfect weather football season, as the rain will begin to fall during the Fabulous Friday Football games. The best idea is to keep the rain gear handy if you’re headed out, no matter where you’re headed.
The weekend will feature a little bit of everything. After the line of showers and storms comes through, the skies will clear out by the afternoon. The rest of the day should be fairly nice, with a mix of sun and clouds and mild temperatures. Sunday starts nice, but another storm system comes into the area from the northwest and brings good rain chances…at first. Temperatures will be falling throughout the day, and eventually will fall far enough that the rain will change over to snow.

How quickly this happens will determine how much of what we eventually see falls as rain and how much falls as snow. Either way, Sunday night will feature some messy weather.
The snow lasts into Monday, with some lake enhancement in some of the northern areas. The other factor to think about regarding accumulation is the surface that the snow falls on. While the grassy areas will see some snow stick around after the storm is gone, the roads and bridges should see mostly wet conditions until late Monday night when temperatures fall into the lower 20s, and some freezing is possible. There is a wide disagreement among the atmospheric models that we look at regarding snow totals. The European model shown below is on the high end of the scale…
Speaking of temperatures, highs on Monday and Tuesday will be way below normal, in the 30s in all areas. Lows will be in the upper 20s on Tuesday night. Towards the middle of next week, a gradual warmup is in the forecast.
