Travelers urged to prioritize health and protect themselves when vacationing in Myrtle Beach as South Carolina fights ongoing measles outbreak

West Virginia  (WOAY) Myrtle Beach for spring break can feel like a home away from home for many West Virginians.

With sunny days and warmer weather right around the corner, you may already be planning your next trip south.

But before you pack the swimsuits and sunscreen, there are a few important health reminders to keep in mind.

South Carolina has been dealing with a large measles outbreak since October of last year, with most new cases reported among unvaccinated people.

Health officials say immunization remains the best protection.

The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is typically recommended starting at one year old.

Health officials report two doses offer about 97% lifetime protection.

An early dose may also be recommended for infants between six and eleven months who are traveling to outbreak areas.

Doctors say it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to provide full immunity, so families are encouraged to check their vaccination status now, ahead of any travel plans.

If you’re unsure about your records, talk with your healthcare provider or visit myirmobile.com to access your West Virginia immunization information.
