Timeline For Gusty Winds, Storms and Snow

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Following a warm Tuesday, expect gusty winds to develop tonight with severe thunderstorms Wednesday and then snow by early Thursday.

STRONG LARGE-SCALE WIND/POWER OUTAGES:

Southeast wind increases to 15 mph after 6 p.m. Gusts will hit 40 mph above 2,500 feet by Midnight with a handful of power outages expected by Midnight. Gusts of 30-40 mph expected below 2,500 feet (most Route 19 communities). Have your backup generator ready before going to bed and your cellphone fully charged.

Mid-5 a.m. Wednesday: Gusts will occasionally hit 45-50 mph above 2,500 feet on occasion and a couple hundred power outages are expected. Below 2,500 feet (Fayetteville, Oak Hill, Pax), gusts will hit 45 mph with sporadic power outages expected.

5 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Gusts will lower a bit to 35 mph OUTSIDE OF STORMS, except 55-65 mph in thunderstorms. YOU WILL LOSE POWER in thunderstorms.

6 p.m. to 11 p.m.: Frequent gusts of 40-50 mph will trigger more power outages.

11 p.m. to Midnight: Gusts drop to 20 mph.

THUNDERSTORMS: 

5-11 a.m. Wednesday: Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will produce at least scattered pockets of 50-60 mph gusts, best coverage in the Greenbrier Valley along a warm front. There is a 40-60% risk for a tornado, best chance in the Greenbrier Valley.

Noon-4 p.m.: Isolated severe thunderstorms with gusts>50 mph will develop along Route 19, likely become a consolidated line of severe storms in eastern Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Monroe County and move into Virginia.

6-9 p.m.: A line of gusty rain, perhaps a storm will quickly push across the entire region from west to east with the actual cold front.

Make sure you have three ways to receive severe weather notifications, preferably NOAA weather radio, EAS alerts on your phone and radio or TV.

QUICK FLOODING:

5-10 AM: There will be standing water on roads, poor drainage spots (bottom of hills) and a few smaller streams will overflow onto adjacent property and roads. No river flooding is expected (Meadow, Greenbrier, Gauley, New River, etc.).

SNOW: Snow commences between 9 p.m. and Midnight on Wednesday and ends by Noon on Thursday. A coating to 0.5″ expected in grassy areas along Route 19 to 2-4″ in western Greenbrier and Pocahontas County.
