OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It has been a nice day around southern West Virginia, a break from the heavy rain and strong storms that rolled through the region yesterday. Some parts of the area saw around 3″ of rain, especially in Tazewell County.
Despite the rain, there was no flooding reported to the National Weather Service offices that cover our area, which shows how dry it’s been and how steady the rain was. We continue to be in severe drought around most of the area. With the dry air in place, lows tonight will be cooler than normal and will drop into the lower to middle 50s, with some upper 40s in the Greenbrier Valley.
Now that the low is gone, we have an area of high pressure over the mid-Mississippi Valley, keeping us dry, although it is a bit on the breezy side as the high interacts with the low that dragged the front through the area and triggered strong to severe storms. The high will dominate the weather on Saturday and keep us partly cloudy to mostly sunny all day. Highs tomorrow will top out in the middle 70s, a couple of degrees below normal. Tomorrow night will see lows in the middle 50s again. There is a small chance for showers as a weak disturbance pushes through the state, but most areas will stay dry.
Sunday, a warm front will overspread the state and will drive the temperatures back into the lower 80s. Behind the warm front, better chances for showers and storms will enter the picture, mainly during the afternoon and evening. The number of showers and storms will be on the upswing as we go into the next traditional work week as the cool front side of the next storm system pushes through. We’ll be monitoring the storms to see if any of them become strong to severe.
