Three Rivers Avian Center reports Clay the bald eagle has been euthanized following declining health from lead poisoning

Brooks, WV (WOAY) We have some sad news from Three Rivers Avian Center.

Clay, a bald eagle being treated at the center, has been euthanized after staff said his injuries were too severe to overcome.

According to the center, high levels of lead in Clay’s body stopped his injuries from healing.

They say a fractured wing showed no signs of recovery, even after surgery, therapy, and medication.

Staff says his muscles and ligaments continued to deteriorate, leaving amputation as the only remaining option.

But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does not allow amputations for bald eagles because of the high risk of repeated falls and long-term complications.

The center says they exhausted every option to save Clay, and they’re heartbroken over the loss.
