OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Some light snow was showing up on the radar this evening around southern West Virginia, but the dry air prevented it from making it to the ground. Now the radar is a clean sweep, but there are still plenty of clouds around. These are combining with a light westerly wind to keep our temperatures significantly warmer than they were this morning. We’ll wind up in the lower 20s, close to where the highs were this afternoon!

Starting tomorrow, we’ll be tracking the first of the two storms that will be affecting our weather. It’s a low coming into the area from the west and southwest, and in addition to giving us chances for precipitation, it will also raise our temperatures into the upper 30s and even lower 40s in some areas. This means rain – rather than snow – in some areas. It looks like the best rain chances will be along and south of Route 460, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of the precipitation fall as rain or a rain/snow mix in other areas as well.

By later in the evening tomorrow, the precipitation will change back over to snow as temperatures cool off.

This first system does have colder air behind it, but the days of lows in the single digits are gone – for now at least – and we’ll see lows in the teens through the rest of the extended forecast.
By the end of the work week, the second of the two lows will move well to our north, but will still impact our weather as it moves through eastern Canada. This is a strong low and will be able to pull some moisture into the region from the Gulf. That means more snow than the amounts that we’re expecting from the midweek storm. How much is the big question. The snow could be intense at times from Friday afternoon into Saturday.

Luckily, the storm is a quick hitter, and while it could drop another several inches of snow, it will be gone by Saturday afternoon (the storm, not the snow). This storm has some cold air behind it as well, but once again it is not as cold as what we’ve seen recently, and there are hints that a more general warmup is in the forecast beyond the end of the seven-day forecast. Temperatures look to be above the normal for the first time in a couple of weeks by the middle of this month. Stay tuned!
