The image above is from Pittsburgh, PA in 1950 just after the Great Appalachian Storm of 1950 had struck most of the eastern United States. It affected our area harshly, as many towns and sites in West Virginia had snow piled on during Thanksgiving week. In total, some areas had over 5 feet of snowfall, causing great damage to many during the holiday.
November 23rd will be the 74th anniversary of the storm’s development, which also happened to be Thanksgiving Day in 1950. Meteorologist Christian Boteler breaks down the records broken and other details of the superstorm:
