The Beckley Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy is coming back for 2025

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- With law enforcement being a hot-button topic these days, the Beckley Police Department is excited to bring back its annual citizen’s police academy course.

The Citizens Police Academy is intended to facilitate communication between local law enforcement and those they enforce. The class begins on April 8th, and the deadline to apply is Saturday, March 29th, 2025.

This annual program explores the “How, what, and whys” of police procedures. It also gives citizens a chance to engage in things they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. The program includes things like interacting with detectives, patrolmen, and other members of the police force, as well as the most popular activity, a police ride-along.

Those interested can visit beckley.org to check their eligibility. While the course is free to enter, it may be canceled if the minimum of 10 students is not met.

“You’re going to meet several different officers. And again, just to see what all we offer here at Beckley Police Department,” said Adam Justice, Patrolman first class. “And it’s not just responding to calls. There’s specialized units within the department and you’ll get to meet a lot of the different officers. And this get more of a of a deeper dive into what what basically police department has.”
