Tazewell, VA (WOAY)- At the June meeting, the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors voted to use $5.8 million in funds discovered in a 2023 audit for long-overdue upgrades across the county’s schools.
That includes more than $2.5 million for repairs at Tazewell High, covering structural wall fixes, restroom renovations, and a new heating system.
Graham and Richlands High will also receive $440,000 each for restroom updates, while $1 million has been budgeted for heating at Tazewell Middle School.
There’s also $1 million in grant money set aside to address flooding issues at Richlands, plus another $220,000 for security doors across all schools.
These funds had gone unreported by the school system for years until an audit uncovered them.
Now, the county is keeping tight control.
Only approved projects will be funded, and every dollar must be tied to a contract.
The Board states that this is about restoring trust and prioritizing student and school safety.
The next vote on fund transfers is set for August 5.
