Strong storms rolled through the region today, starting in the southern coalfields and moving through the West Virginia Turnpike and Route 19 corridors. Heavy rain fell and by the time the showers were done, more than 3″ of rain fell in parts of McDowell. Fayette and Nicholas Counties.

The result was a Flash Flood Warning for all those areas plus a small portion of Raleigh County this afternoon.

Now more showers and storms are pushing towards the region from Kentucky and they’ll push through the southern coalfields, meaning that more flooding concerns are in the near-term forecast. It’s the biggest threat that we face this evening, but strong winds are also possible with some of the storms.

The chances for showers and storms will continue through the next couple of days and once again some of them could be on the strong side. It does not appear that the storms will be as strong as they were today, but with so much rain over the past few days, the soils are saturated, and it won’t take much to get more flooding.

As we go through the rest of the forecast, we’ll see the rain chances taper off a bit, but they’ll still be with us throughout the seven days.
