WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): This week is starting on a busy note. Conditions have been quieter this morning, but more showers and storms are expected through the morning. These will become widespread in the afternoon and evening as the approaching frontal system will pass through. There are several threats present today, including strong thunderstorms and heavy rain. A Flood Watch has been issued for the entire viewing area until 11 PM tonight by the National Weather Service. After rainfall last week, more heavy rain may present difficulties. Ponding water, flooded roadways, and run-off affecting creeks and streams is possible. If you run into flood waters, do not drive or wade into them. Rainfall will vary per location, but a general half an inch to an inch is likely. Some areas may receive up to an inch and a half depending on where repeat downpours occur.
Along with the flooding issues, severe weather is possible. This morning will consist of scattered storms, but these will weaken a bit before reaching our area. The strongest activity will occur this afternoon and evening as the front is passing through. The main concern within severe thunderstorms is damaging winds up to 65 miles per hour. Hail and tornadic activity is not likely, but cannot be ruled out either. Make sure you stay aware through the day. Showers will linger into Tuesday morning, eventually dissipating in the afternoon. Any remaining activity will be weak and light. Temperatures will stay in the low 70s tomorrow afternoon after showers leave, making for a more comfortable afternoon and evening commute. This break continues into Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure remains in the region. Temperatures will rise back into the upper 70s by Wednesday, so it will feel a bit more like summer for the middle of the week.
This break will be nice, but rain comes back into the forecast late Thursday night. Showers will kick off the active pattern, turning into scattered storms on Friday. The low-pressure system will pass through the area on Saturday, which will be the majority of our rain and the highest chance of storms for the second half of the extended forecast. After the low-pressure system moves through, showers will linger on Sunday. While this may put a damper on weekend plans, we still need a good amount of rain to recover from the current drought.
