OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures were the weather stories for Wednesday around the region. The stubborn clouds that we saw throughout the day yesterday finally dissipated as the flow turned to the south and southwest. With that, a brief warming trend has begun. Highs for the next few days will be in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, while lows will be in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. We’ve seen persistent patchy fog at night in some areas, and there could be some of that again.
Tomorrow will be the last of the nice, warm, summer-like days around the area, at least for a while. It will be a great day to do anything outside, although sunscreen is still necessary for long stretches outside in the late morning and early afternoon, even though the UV index is lower this time of the year. Some extra water will come in handy as well, with dry enough weather to cause potential issues with strenuous activity.

Friday, the low that we have been tracking for the past few days finally arrives in our area, dragged through by a low-pressure center that will pass to our north. The low is able to tap into moisture from both the Gulf, and also from the eastern Pacific thanks to the remnants of what was once major Hurricane Polo.

The current thinking is that the Friday night football games should be ok weather-wise, although having the rain gear will be a good idea. The showers look to be scattered and light.
Unfortunately for the large number of outdoor events that are taking place, the weekend will be a wet one with a good chance of showers.

An isolated storm or two can’t be ruled out, but severe weather is not expected. What will be possible is flooding, especially by Sunday, as heavy rain could fall in the same area on multiple occasions, something we call training. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted the southern portions of the region in the 5-15% risk area for flash flooding between Saturday and Sunday.

This area has been pushed southward since yesterday, and there is a possibility that the heaviest rain will be to our south, and this is something we’ll be tracking over the next couple of days.
After the front is through, skies will clear, and temperatures will cool off to a similar level to what we saw a few days ago, with highs in the lower 60s and lows in the lower 40s.
