Snow Falling in the Coalfields; Gradually Spreads North

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Snow has started falling in the southern coalfields as of this morning, and will continue to do so through the day. In fact, this snow will ride up the spine of our viewing area, bringing snow to most of our residents by evening. This time around, the snow will be fluffy and no ice will be falling with this storm. The heaviest snow will fall in McDowell, Mercer, and Tazewell counties, while 3-5″ will fall in Beckley and further south. Snow won’t stick around as long in our northern counties, bringing in lighter snow totals for those communities. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

As the weekend starts, snow will be widespread in the region. Throughout the day, it will gradually move south until finally leaving the southern coalfields late at night and early Sunday morning. The snow will be amplified by the developing nor’easter off of the Carolina coast, but the worst of it will be well to our south and east. This is why snow will last through most of the day, especially in the southern coalfields. By Sunday, conditions will be dry but very cold. The cold weather lasts through Sunday before slowly improving on Monday. By the end of the weekend, we’ll see an apparent trend of increasing snowfall the farther south you head. Here’s a look at our latest snowfall forecast:

Temperatures start the climb back to above-freezing values, but won’t get there until Wednesday. Groundhogs Day, which is Monday, will feature partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-20s. If I were a gambling man, I’d bet on our friend French Creek Freddie predicting an extended winter. Tuesday gets a little better as temperatures finally eclipse 30 degrees. Wednesday is when we get our first day above-freezing in a while, but it comes with a catch. It is becoming more likely that a new system will develop in the Midwest and bring more rain and snow into the region. We’ll have more details as they come. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
