Showers and storms tonight, clearing tomorrow

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We continue to track some showers and storms that are making their way through the region this evening.

This round is nothing like the first round that produced some very rough weather in parts of the region this morning. Tonight, the main weather threat in areas seeing rain is the possibility of flooding. We do have a Flood Watch in effect for McDowell, Raleigh, and Wyoming Counties until 2 a.m. Friday and for Mercer and Tazewell Counties until 4 a.m. Friday.

One saving grace when it comes to the location of the heavy rain is that it’s falling in a part of the area that has been very dry, reducing the flooding chances. The latest drought monitor came out today, and while there has been some improvement, most of the area remains in severe drought.

We also caught a break today with the cloud cover, which kept the sun from recharging the atmosphere. Instead of the two rounds of severe weather that we anticipated, we saw rain showers with only a few rumbles of thunder. In addition to the chance of rain, patchy fog is possible area-wide with so much moisture hanging around and temperatures cooling to the dew points. Despite the cloud cover, temperatures will fall to the lower 60s, a bit cooler than last night thanks to the influx of cool air behind the front that triggered the storms today.

Tomorrow will start with continued chances for showers and storms. But as the day goes on, skies will become mostly clear, and temperatures will top out in the lower to middle 70s. There will be a breeze from the northwest as our advancing low interacts with high pressure settling in over the mid-Mississippi Valley. The high will keep our skies clear for a couple of days, and with the dry air in place, our lows tomorrow night will be in the lower to middle 50s.
Father’s Day Weekend will feature a mixed bag of weather as the high will keep things nice through Saturday and into Sunday before another low-pressure center approaches from the Rockies and returns shower chances to the forecast.
Next week should be active again as more rain chances remain in the forecast. By the time we finish the seven-day outlook, some areas will likely see more than 3″ of rain.
