Showers and storms have returned

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Today started with more of the same, plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. Before the rain moved in, the high was 88 in Beckley and 84 in Bluefield. Both cities were only a few degrees shy of records for the date. The rain cooled things off, but any showers and storms ended shortly after sunset, and skies will clear a bit. There could be some patchy fog tomorrow morning in areas that saw rain today. Lows tonight will be in the mid-60s.

Tomorrow, another round of showers and storms will come through the region, possibly with heavy rain attached.

Watch out for some of the usual issues: ponding water on the roads and some standing water in low-lying spots. While one or two of the storms will be strong, the chance for severe weather is small. All storms are tied to the first of two fronts we’ll be tracking over the extended forecast period. With the front beginning to make its presence known, temperatures will be slightly cooler. Highs will only be around 80 degrees. The main forecast question regarding our football games still involves the position of the front. The current thinking remains the same: the front will clear most of the area by kickoff, with the best chances for a rainy start to the games in the southern areas.

With the front to our south over North Carolina, the start of the weekend will be nice. Showers and storms return by the afternoon as a warm front associated with a secondary low will overspread the region from southwest to northeast. Behind the warm front, temperatures go up slightly during the weekend, with Sunday a shade warmer than Saturday. The cold front moves in by early Monday and then stalls out just off to the south. The front will continue to produce rain for the rest of the forecast. With this front also to our south, high temperatures will drop into the lower to mid-70s beginning next Wednesday.
