Much colder air is set to move in

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’ve seen some showers around the area this evening as several waves of rain push through. The clouds and showers will keep us very mild tonight, with lows in similar territory to where they were last night. We’ll only drop into the lower 60s, only a couple of degrees shy of the average high for mid-October in Beckley.

The rain that will fall over the next couple of days is associated with two fronts that will combine to dramatically change our weather. The showers today are associated with a stationary front, which is yesterday’s front stalled out just to our south. The low that front is attached to is over the Canadian Maritimes today. A secondary low is over the Canadian Prairies and should slide east during the day tomorrow. With the warm start to the day, temperatures tomorrow will wind up in the mid-70s again. But that will be early in the day. A cold front comes through later in the day, and at that point, the winds will shift around to the northwest and north, allowing the coldest air of the season to move in. By the time we end the day, we’ll be in the upper 30s and lower 40s, and it will feel colder than that with the wind.
Before that happens, some of the storms with this Friday front will be strong, and one or two might become severe over our area.
If they do become severe, damaging winds are the main threat with a wind gust or two up to 60 mph. For now, the threat for severe weather is confined to part of Pocahontas County, but it might get stretched southwestward as the atmosphere will become somewhat unstable, especially if the sun breaks out.
We start the weekend with a few lingering showers and very cold temperatures. Most of what we see will fall as a light, cold rain. Some of the highest elevation areas, however, will see a mix of precipitation or all-out snow.
Any precipitation should be gone by the start of the Bridge Day festivities, but there could be a few sprinkles. As the day goes on, the sun breaks out, but it doesn’t help much. Highs will end up in the upper 40s. Saturday night will be very cold again, with most areas seeing the first freeze of the season. In the high elevation areas, a hard freeze is in the forecast. Highs Sunday afternoon will be a bit warmer, rising into the upper 50s.
The cold snap that dominates the weather this weekend won’t last long. As we go into the next traditional work week, temperatures will be close to normal again, with highs in the mid-60s and lows in the lower 40s.
