Weekend outlook: Cold and windy, but with plenty of sunshine

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – A strong front rolled through the region yesterday, producing showers and a few storms, but also leaving much colder air in its wake. We’re starting the weekend with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s. A few lingering showers are being seen as well on the radar, and some of these could be falling in wintry form in the highest elevation portions of the area. For the Bridge Day festivities, we should be dry, but it will be a cold day, and it will be windy as well.

Highs will be around the 50-degree mark, with winds out of the northwest at between 10 and 20 miles per hour, with higher gusts. That will make it feel even colder than the already chilly readings would suggest. As the day goes on and we lose what little heating of the day there will be, temperatures will drop to and below the freezing mark in most areas for the first time this season. With the possibility of freezing temperatures everywhere, some areas are under a Freeze Watch from tonight until 9 a.m. Sunday morning, while others are under a Freeze Warning with the same expiration time. We’ll drop to the lower 30s in most areas tonight, with upper 20s and lower 30s in areas along and to the northwest of the spine of the Appalachians.

Overall, after the cold start, tomorrow will be a nicer day around the region. Highs will top out in the mid-to-upper-50s. The downside is that we’ll keep the breezy winds as high pressure just off to our northeast in western Pennsylvania interacts with a developing low off the Virginia coast to give us a good breeze. The high will keep us dry not only on Sunday but through the rest of the extended forecast.
