BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – You don’t have to wait for the holidays to help those in need when you can make a difference now.
On July 25, a steady stream of givers stopped at the Beckley Crossing Kroger red kettle to contribute to the Salvation Army’s ‘Christmas in July‘ campaign.
“To help serve the community better through our social services programs and our boys and girls club,” said lt. Arkadia Bottenfield. “It allows us an opportunity to get more involved than just doing it during the winter time, but more at the halfway mark to Christmas.”
As the Salvation Army raises critical funds during a typically slow donation time five months from Christmas, they welcome anything you can contribute. The Beckley Fire Department was also on-site as bell ringers for the Red Kettle Campaign.
“Come by, say hi, say thank you for their service in helping us out today,” Bottenfield said. “And just donate if you’re able to, to help further the mission.”
It would mean so much to anyone struggling with food instability, paying bills or eviction notices — also to let them know they are not alone.
“It’s a great way to refresh your mind and remind you that giving doesn’t have a season,” said Bottenfield. “It’s all year round.”
The Salvation Army is about faith and family. It played a big part in the lieutenant’s life, and this campaign is personal.
“I’m actually a kid that grew up in the Salvation Army,” Bottenfield said. “It reminds me of what they do, what they’ve done for me and my family personally, and what they can do for others in the future.”
