Grafton, WV (WOAY) – A West Virginia hero was laid to rest yesterday.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard in the 863rd military police company, was buried in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton.
Beckstrom died after being shot in the line of duty by a gunman in Washington, D.C.
Major Christopher Bennett, a chaplain in the 111th Engineer Brigade, presided over the ceremony.
He reminded those in attendance that spots in the national cemetery cannot be purchased. Each one must be earned, and he said that Beckstrom earned her place of honor.
Beckstrom was born on May 17 of 2005. She graduated from Webster County High School with honors. She was described as a quiet professional who was dedicated and selfless.
All of West Virginia’s congressional delegation attended, as well as numerous leaders in the National Guard.
Governor Patrick Morrisey also attended the funeral. In a statement after, he said, ” Sarah served her state and nation with courage well beyond her years. Taken from us far too soon, she will always be remembered fondly by the West Virginia National Guard and by the people of our state.”
