Raleigh County man faces DUI charges after striking an unmarked county sheriff’s vehicle

Beckley, WV (WOAY)- A Mabscott man is facing charges in connection with impaired driving. 

Raleigh County Sheriff’s report that on May 30, a lieutenant responded to a motor vehicle collision involving an unmarked Raleigh County Sheriff’s vehicle on 3rd Avenue in Beckley.  

A blue vehicle rear-ended the unmarked sheriff’s vehicle, then reportedly fled the scene without stopping to provide information or complete a crash report as required by law. 

The deputy followed the vehicle, waiting for uniformed officers to intercept it.  

During this time, the blue vehicle was driving recklessly and struck a utility pole.  

The vehicle eventually stopped at a residence in Mabscott, where officers detained the driver and discovered he was under the influence after conducting an impaired driving investigation.  

The driver, 25-year-old James W. Hamrick, of Mabscott, was taken into custody for 1st offense Driving under the Influence of Controlled Substances. 

Hamrick awaits further court proceedings in Southern Regional Jail on a $ 2,500 bond pending further action in the Raleigh County Magistrate Court.
