Raleigh County deputy retires after 23 years of service

Friends, family, deputies, and community members gathered at the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office to celebrate the retirement of Sergeant Dale Pack and thank him for 23 years of service to his community.

“I feel like I’ve had a good career helping our community here in Raleigh County. And I’ve got to help people get stolen stuff back. I’ve put people in jail for being mean to their wives and that kind of stuff. Domestics. But, you know, I’ve done a little bit of everything.”

Sergeant Pack served as a marine overseas and came home to continue service as a patrol officer, then as a court bailiff, and as Captain Larry D. Lilly applauded:

“In his last several years, he was probably one of the most important things we do, which is protecting our children as a school resource officer. I don’t think there’s too many things that are more important than that.”

Sergeant Pack says he hopes he set a good example for the students, and that he will miss cruising the community and helping people feel safe. Pack’s fellow deputies will also miss his support. Sergeant Lonnie Carper reflects on his time working with Pack:

“Very hard worker. Very good Christian man. Great family guy. Just a phenomenal coworker. He got hired about two months before I did, so we got to start our careers out together. But he worked as my supervisor in the school resource division prior to me taking over.”

While his law enforcement career is ending, Sergeant Pack hopes to continue his service to the area’s youth:

“It still hasn’t hit me, and I’m still kind of in that transfer stage. But I have a business. I have a horse boarding and riding program from outside of Washington. And so I’ve got that to keep me busy. We try to keep the kids busy at the barn with lessons and doing chores, that kind of stuff. Keep them out of trouble. So I’m continuing to try to save the kids, you know, through that program.”
