Pierce Cemetery preservation project continues on April 26 with documentation; volunteers welcome

Fayetteville, WV (WOAY)- If you want to help preserve a piece of local history, we have an opportunity for you.

The National Coal Heritage Area and Preserve WV AmeriCorps are collaborating with the Pierce Cemetery Foundation to preserve Fayetteville’s largest African American burial ground.

Two weeks ago, volunteers met at Pierce Cemetery to clean and prepare the grounds for preservation.

Now, the next stage of the project is documentation.

There will be a training session at Fayetteville Town Hall on Saturday, April 26, from 10:00 am to noon.

At 1:00 pm, the group will go to the cemetery to start the documentation process.

There will be another documentation session on Sunday, April 27th, with a brief training session from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and documentation from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
