BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Home Base, Inc. has expanded its brand to provide access to behavioral health services in Beckley for both walk-in and non-referral clients.
Parenting & Behavioral Support Center hopes to make a meaningful impact on children and families in Raleigh County.
With 14 locations, they’ve worked with CPS and other state programs since 1999, hoping to fill the gap – whether it be to help with DHHR forms or visitation. They have a nurturing parenting curriculum and certified staff who teach that. They also have monthly events.
“Like CPR, Narcan, WBDRS, plant-based cooking on our website, which is
https://www.homebaseinc.org/,” said director, Dr. Linn Sheik. “And then we do therapy sessions for individuals, families, crisis management, couples therapy, anger management. And to help those families receive the services that they need.”
Something like this is essential. In Raleigh County alone Sheik says there are 100 homeless families.
“So you can imagine what kind of stress that is on the family. What all the needs that they have, what kind of stress it is on the kids. We also take Medicaid, which is very unusual for therapeutic services.”
The Parenting and Behavior Support Center is open from 9 am to 5 pm, whoever walks through its door gets an assessment, treatment plan and is assigned a therapist. Sheik says she’s looking forward to a stronger base on the children’s side.
“I have a lot of association with kids at the high school and realize a lot of the things that they’re going through. I mean, there are even ones sleeping in their cars,” she said. “We want to make sure that, you know, they’re getting the services they need.”
You’re not alone — Sheik says the therapists can relate because they’ve been there.
“Everyone has had their own trauma,” said the director. “And actually everyone needs a therapist. You need somebody that you could talk to.”
