National Take Down Your Christmas Tree Day on January 6

West Virginia (WOAY) If you haven’t taken down your Christmas Tree yet, don’t worry, because you’re actually right on time.

National Take Down Your Christmas Tree Day on Tuesday, January 6.

The holiday marks the final day of the holiday season and serves as a reminder for households to take down their trees and seasonal decorations.

The day aligns with the Twelfth Night and the Feast of the Epiphany, wrapping up the traditional twelve-day celebration following Christmas.

The importance of the day is household safety and environmental responsibility.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, real Christmas trees become increasingly flammable as they dry over several weeks.

By January 6, most trees that residents harvested in late November or early December lose moisture, creating a serious fire hazard when left near heat sources or faulty electrical lights.

There are some tips for removing your tree to prevent damage to ornaments and minimize the mess.

Start by removing fragile decorations and wrapping them in acid-free paper or bubble wrap to prevent fading or breakage.

Once the tree is bare, place a large sheet or tree bag underneath it before moving it toward the exit to help capture the dry needles during the removal process.

If you have a real tree, the most effective way to observe the day is to participate in local “treecycling” programs.

Many cities set up drop-off points to ground into mulch for public parks and gardens.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) recommends contacting your local solid waste authority, as they may offer to dispose of it for you.

If you have an artificial tree, check for frayed wires or broken limbs before packing it into a sturdy, moisture-proof storage container.

Cleaning the floor immediately after the tree is gone prevents pets or children from encountering sharp needles or leftover hooks.
