FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – A Fayette County has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder.
Charles Redman, a 55-year-old man from Mount Olive, stabbed a fellow inmate in Mount Olive Correctional Center to death last year.
Prosecuting Attorney Anthony Ciliberti said that Redman attacked the victim while in a common area.
The victim then walked upstairs. Redman followed him and began stabbing him without provocation.
The inmate died later that night at Montgomery General Hospital. Investigators identified four stab wounds and were able to locate the murder weapon after reviewing surveillance footage.
The weapon, an approximately eight-inch piece of sharpened metal, had the victim’s DNA on it. Surveillance footage appeared to show Redman discarding it.
Redman suggested to officers that he was responsible and also confessed during a call with a family member.
The case was investigated by the state police and prosecuted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Sarah F. Smith and Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jennifer D. Crane.
