Monongahela National Forest Crews and local firefighters working to extinguish wildfire in Greenbrier County

Update: White Sulphur Springs, WV (WOAY) – Fire crews continue to battle a wildfire burning in the Monongahela National Forest.

According to a Facebook post from the U.S. Forestry Service, as of 1:00 p.m. Monday April 21, 2025, The Whitman Fire has burned nearly 300 acres. Forestry officials say there is no threat to homes or structures at this time.

The location of the fire is approximately six miles north of the White Sulphur Springs area of Greenbrier County, near Brushy Mountain between Forest Service Road 718 and Whitman Draft in the Monongahela National Forest.

Around 70 personnel from multiple agencies are at the scene of the fire working with four engines, a helicopter, and a bulldozer.

The U.S. Forestry Service asks the public to avoid the area to allow emergency and air crews to respond to the fire, and to ensure firefighter and public safety.

The U.S. Forest Service reports that the Whitman Fire is roughly six miles north of White Sulphur Springs near Brushy Mountain.
The fire encompasses about 280 acres of the Monongahela National Forest.
The Forest Service reports that crews were on the scene with local volunteer fire departments, fighting the flames on Sunday night.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
