May 5th is Cinco de Mayo, celebrating the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla

CNN- Today is Cinco de Mayo!

The holiday is not Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

The Mexican army won despite being smaller and ill-equipped.

Cinco de Mayo is observed in Mexico with political speeches and battle re-enactments.

In the 1960s and ’70s, the day became identified with the Chicano rights movement in the U.S., especially in California.

The day has evolved into one to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

Many U.S. cities hold parades and festivities featuring mariachi music, dancing, and Mexican food.
