March marks Red Cross Month honoring those who donate blood, time and effort to saving lives

West Virginia (WOAY) March marks Red Cross Month, a time to recognize the volunteers and workers who help carry out lifesaving missions across the country and around the world.

The month honors the work of the American Red Cross, which provides humanitarian aid during disasters, emergencies, and times of crisis.
The observance dates back to 1943, when Franklin D. Roosevelt first proclaimed March as Red Cross Month during World War II to raise awareness of the organization’s mission and encourage public support.
People can get involved by volunteering, donating blood, making a financial contribution, or taking classes like CPR and first aid through the Red Cross.
Officials say the goal is simple: helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

The organization is urging donors to roll up their sleeves and help save lives, and this month, you could even be saving your own life.

This March, the American Red Cross is offering free A1C testing, commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes, when you donate blood.

Each donor can receive one result per calendar year, with terms applying.

For added incentive, donors who give this month will earn a $15 Amazon gift card via email.
