Fayette County, WV (WOAY) EMS crews had a busy morning in Fayette County this Sunday.
Heavy rain contributed to downed trees and power lines in Garten on Gatewood Road.
The rain also left several roadways submerged, rendering them impassable.
Emergency officials urge drivers to exercise caution if they encounter flooded roadways.
Fire Chief of the Fayetteville Fire Department John Vernon urges drivers to avoid high water and avoid traveling through affected areas if at all possible.
“There’s been several instances in the county where people have driven into water even though you keep hearing turn around, don’t drown. People are still doing that. We would suggest those people stay off the secondary roads because there are many trees that are still blocking the roads and where the ditches are washed out and there’s no access. So we would advise people, if they don’t have to get out right now, to please stay home.”
It only takes 12 inches of fast-moving water to float and carry most vehicles. For larger SUVs, trucks, and vans, it requires only 18 to 24 inches to sweep them off the road, according to the National Weather Service.
