WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Showers have been passing through the region since yesterday. Activity will continue through the morning commute, which will make rain gear useful. Most of the action has occurred north of Beckley, but rain is expected to move into the rest of the region a bit later this morning. A brief lull in activity is possible around noon, but thunderstorms will form by mid-afternoon. Heavy rain will be isolated within the showers and storms that form. Stronger storms will likely remain east and south of the viewing area, but a gusty storm is not out of the question.
Fabulous Football Friday has already seen its fair share of weather, and this trend continues today. The good news is that showers and storms should be few and far between by this evening. Storms will also be much weaker, which is good news. It is still a good idea to have rain gear in hand in case a stray shower or storm passes, but these chances remain low by kickoff. Any remaining activity leaves overnight, ending the day on a calmer note. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest forecast:
Saturday will start off calmly, but showers and storms return in the afternoon. A second disturbance will push through, bringing widespread storms into the region. Heavy rain is the main concern yet again. Plenty of moisture is available in the atmosphere, which increases flooding chances. The Weather Prediction Center’s Excessive Rainfall Outlook puts the northwestern corner of our viewing area at a “Slight” risk, which indicates a meaningful chance for localized impacts. The rest of our viewing area is at a “Marginal” chance, signifying a low-end chance of impacts. Storms are trending to stay sub-severe, but a gusty storm is possible.
Rainfall will start in the afternoon, but activity will peak in the evening. Storms last through the overnight hours and into Sunday morning before beginning to break down. Conditions eventually clear up during the afternoon and evening, but the area remains gloomy and damp even after the rain leaves. It will be a good weekend to catch up on a show, enjoy the football season, or get a good nap in.
Dry and sunny conditions return as we begin the next work week. Nicer weather remains in the region both Monday and Tuesday as high pressure sets up close to the region. Mostly sunny skies and high temperatures teetering between 80 and 85 degrees are the main headlines concerning early next week. If you have outdoor plans, this stretch will be the best time to get them done. Wednesday starts nicely too, but isolated showers return ahead of the next front.
