MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. (WOAY) – A fire broke out last week at Lake Shawnee Abandoned Amusement Park, damaging a key building used for media production and tourism operations.
The park, known for its eerie past and historic significance, has drawn visitors from across the country for decades. Chris White, the property’s owner and caretaker, said the fire remains under investigation.
“Early last week, we had a fire that broke out in the park; they’re just trying to put all the pieces together,” White said.
The fire destroyed a small building used as an editing and production hub for visiting TV crews and filmmakers. While no artifacts were lost, White said it was a close call.
“Luckily, we did not lose any of the artifacts or any of the pictures… but it could have really easily started in another building, and you cannot replace the artifacts,” he said.
White emphasized that the park plays a major role in promoting tourism across southern West Virginia.
“It brings people to southern West Virginia… it helps drive the economy,” he said. “We get people that drive hundreds of miles because they like our state parks and they’re curious about all the hidden treasures in West Virginia.”
While tours are still happening, the family is now focused on rebuilding. They’re asking for help from the community in the form of rough cut lumber, electrical supplies, or volunteer labor.
“All we need is rough cut lumber, maybe some electrical supplies… you can call us at (304) 921-1580,” White said.
