TR Tax guides you through tax season

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – It’s that time of year again. Pay your taxes if you have W2s, 1099s, and forms for every job you worked in 2024.

April 15th is the deadline. Remember: an extension only applies to filing a return, not the time to pay.

And West Virginians have a new refundable motor vehicle tax credit

“The important thing about this credit is we must pay our personal property tax or that motor vehicle tax, timely,” said TR Tax Accountant Tony Martin. “When we get that form from the assessor’s office in April we fill out listing our vehicles and dogs, different things we get a tax bill telling you what portion of your vehicle taxes qualify for that tax credit.”

According to Martin, you can claim that on your West Virginia state tax return and you’ll get 100 percent of what you paid in vehicle taxes if they were paid timely as part of your state refund. It even applies to people not normally required to file a tax return or state tax return.

And the accountant says if you have dependent children, finalized an adoption this year, or have adopted children, you’ll want to gather their information.

“Social Security numbers, birthdays, name, spellings and make sure we have all that information complete as it’s listed on the Social Security card,” Martin said. “If you’re a small business owner, made a charitable contribution, or had large medical expenses this year, you’ll want to start gathering that information as well.”
