Invasive Spotted Lantern flies species returns to United States

West Virginia (CNN)- The damage-causing spotted lantern flies have returned to the U.S.

As of April 11, the insects and their egg masses have been found in Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Officials in these 17 states advise residents to look for and destroy lantern eggs before they hatch.

The invasive pests feast on a wide range of plants and pose a danger to crops.

Scraping and smashing them is easy and requires no tools.

The egg masses can be found on various surfaces, including trees, rocks, vehicles, equipment, and lawn furniture.
