Historic Snowstorm Slams into the Gulf Coast

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Tuesday, January 21st was the start of a record-breaking  storm that has since torn through the Gulf Coast up into the Carolinas, dropping several inches of snow and breaking records along the storm’s track. Meteorologist Christian Boteler dives into the snowy beaches to unravel the results of this historical storm:

The storm ranged across the Gulf Coast and moved up into Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Many places saw 4″ or more of snow, with areas of Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and the Outer Banks measuring more than a half foot of snow. The Lake Charles NWS Forecasting Office also issued its first Blizzard Warning in the Office’s history, emphasizing how severe the storm across the Gulf Coast.

All of the snow in the south should melt away over the weekend, but they may also experience Frost Quakes. These are caused by the ground water freezing, expanding, and causing a pressure build-up that eventually makes the ground crack and shake. While they are more familiar in our neck of the woods, these phenomena may be new to many residents in the area.
