Hinton, WV (WOAY) – The Hinton Police Department is asking for help from the public to locate a man who escaped from police custody.
According to a media release from Hinton PD, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, officers responded to a reported drive-by shooting in the area of Westend/14th Ave and Temple Street.
Officers say a person in a vehicle allegedly fired multiple rounds into a residence while traveling through the area, causing damage to the property. No injuries were reported in the incident. Officers secured the area and determined there was no immediate danger to public safety.
During the course of the investigation, officers identified Gary Wilson as the alleged primary suspect, and he was taken into custody.
Around 6:00 p.m., officers say Gary Wilson escaped police custody in the area of the Avis/Hinton Police Department.
According to Hinton PD, Mr. Wilson is considered a fugitive and is wanted by law enforcement on charges of wanton endangerment and attempted commission of a felony.
Gary Wilson is described as a 5’11 black male who was last seen wearing a dark grey hoodie and weighs around 150lbs.
Officers with the Hinton Police Department, Summers County Sheriff’s Department, West Virginia State Police and the US Marshals Service are actively searching for the suspect. The incident remains under investigation.
