Weekend storm update: still a blurry picture

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We continue to track two storms that will make their way through the area over the next few days.

The first of these two storms arrives tomorrow and will bring warmer temperatures, but will also bring a chance for rain and snow. Much of the precipitation will fall as rain because temperatures will be rising into the middle 40s by the afternoon after another cold start to the day.

As day turns to night, temperatures fall enough to see some of the rain will change over to snow. But it won’t be anywhere near as cold as it has been over the past couple of days. Tomorrow night’s low will be around the freezing mark, well above where the highs have been the last couple of days.

Thursday and Friday are transition days as we await the next storm system. Highs will begin to drop off on Friday as cold air invades the region from the Arctic. Then comes Saturday…

The second storm arrives this weekend from the southwest. We know the timing of the storm pretty well. We also know that any precipitation that we pick up will fall as snow. The big question regarding this next storm will involve its track. It’s still a matter of how far north the storm tracks. The two major atmospheric models are vastly different in their snowfall total forecasts. If the storm tracks further north – as the European model predicts – the snow totals will be very heavy for our area, it could total more than a foot in the Greenbrier Valley and southern coalfields.

If it tracks further south – as the GFS model has been predicting – then there will be less snow.

The most recent run of the GFS has brought it much more in line with the European model, but is that an outlier? This uncertainty continues to make this forecast a very tricky one. We continue to monitor this storm, and over the next day or two, we should have a better grasp of the track and totals of what will be a major weather maker for the East this weekend.
