High fire danger for some areas today, but relief is on the way

What a great day it was around the area! Unfortunately, there was a downside to all this nice weather.
With the warm temperatures, low humidity, dry tinder, and gusty winds there was an elevated fire danger this afternoon. The National Weather Service office in Charleston issued a Red Flag Warning until 10 p.m. tonight. The warning extends longer than it might otherwise go due to the dry air and winds that will stay breezy through the night.
Relief from the fire danger is coming in the form of some showers that will roll into the area tomorrow morning in association with a front that will swing through the region, bringing rain showers at first, changing over to snow later on as temperatures drop. Accumulations will not be heavy – perhaps an inch or two in the mountains and along the I-77 corridor as the winds shift to a northwesterly direction and upsloping occurs there – but it will make the roads wet in most areas and slushy on some of the more lightly traveled routes.
The weekend looks like it will be nice but cool around the region, with highs around 50 degrees and lows in the 30s on both days. Sunday night, another system comes into the area and gives us another chance for showers, this time in the wet form for almost all areas. It’s the first of two quick-hitting systems that will give us good chances for rain and snow through early Tuesday. Once again, any accumulations should be light, and rainfall amounts should be pretty low. Any concerns for the daily commute will be in the form of wet roads and possibly some standing water in low-lying spots.
