West Virginia (CNN) A group of food stamp recipients is suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
On Wednesday, five people filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture over restrictions in their five states that ban them from buying sugary drinks, candy, or prepared desserts.
The plaintiffs argue that the Trump administration violated laws that authorize SNAP benefits and governing policy changes.
They add that the restrictions create confusion.
The lawsuit also claims that the USDA authorized states to haphazardly limit the legal definition of “food” without notice or public input.
Thus far, the agriculture department has approved waivers in 22 states.
The lawsuit aims to halt waivers in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
