OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We saw cold temperatures and some lingering rain and, yes, snow around the region this morning. The snow didn’t stick, of course – temperatures in the 70s and 80s over most of the last two weeks ensured that the ground is far too warm to have that happen. Despite abundant sunshine, temperatures were still cold this afternoon as cold air is being driven into the area from Canada, and high pressure sits just off to our northwest.

Lows tonight will be around the freezing mark once again, and Freeze Warnings are in effect for all counties in our area.

Tomorrow, the high pressure begins to slide off to the northeast of the area, and a return flow out of the southwest will set up. When we combine that with the dry air that remains in place, that means that temperatures will rise quite a bit tomorrow. After the near and below freezing lows that we mentioned above, tomorrow morning, highs will push the 70-degree mark by the end of the day. Similar to today, there will be plenty of sunshine. The only downside will be elevated fire danger with some breezy winds.

A disturbance moving into the region on Wednesday will bring chances for showers and storms.

It’s one of two systems that we’ll be tracking for you over the next seven days. The bulk of the rain associated with this first system will be to our north, but northern portions of our area will pick up some rain as well. Unfortunately, it looks like the areas that are in the highest drought level right now will not see much rain this time.
For those areas, we’ll have to wait for the next storm system to come into the region this weekend to see good rain chances. This is a cool front that will move in from the usual northwesterly direction.

Overall rain totals when you include both systems will be respectable, but not enough to erase the drought. It will ease it a bit, however.
The one thing the next front won’t bring is more of the cold air we’re seeing today. In fact, once temperatures rebound tomorrow afternoon, both highs and lows will be above the normal again through the rest of the extended forecast. And, for now, at least, the 6–10-day forecast calls for above-normal temperatures to stay with us through the end of the month.
