Feeling Winter Early

Temperatures will be mild for one more day (Sunday) before we sharply drop off in temperatures Sunday night into the mid 20’s. Some rain showers will be possible through the area Sunday before it transitions to snow for nearly everyone Sunday evening into Monday. The snow should linger throughout the area most of the day Monday, it won’t be completely constant for everyone as it should pass through in snow showers. By Monday evening, weather models are consistent that there will be big blast of snow coming through in a small line, which should be the final snow of the event for most people. Parts of Nicholas and Pocahontas County could see snow through Tuesday.

When it comes to snowfall totals, there is still quite a bit of uncertainty on the exact totals. We can, however, expect most people to see accumulating snow (>0.1 inches) on grassy surfaces. The highest snow totals will be in the higher elevations of our area, toward portions of Nicholas, Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties. A few locations might be able to squeeze out more than 5 inches of snow, however that will be strictly dependent on where the heaviest snow bands happen to set up. Most likely across parts of Pocahontas County.

As we look ahead to the 7 day forecast, a very good chance to see snow for most people throughout the day on Monday, with some lingering snow showers on Tuesday. That will be mainly confined to parts of Nicholas and Pocahontas Counties. Highs in the 30’s and low’s approaching the teens will convert to highs in the 50’s and low’s in the 30’s by late week. Wind chills Monday and Tuesday morning could approach single digits in the highest elevations. Just to note, most of the roads in the area will be recovering from 50 degree ground temperatures, so it will take a lot for it to get icy and slick. As we get into Tuesday morning, the slick conditions could be more likely as we dip into the 20’s for two mornings.
