Dry early, then active weather ahead

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was another nice day around our area today, with mild temperatures and a mix of sun and clouds. There were a few showers around, but these were confined to the far northern and northeastern areas and were widely scattered and light. It was nowhere near enough to erase the drought. The showers that are falling should end by late tonight. Lows will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s, close to where they have been for the last few days.

The latest drought monitor came out today, and the area in a Severe drought has expanded to include almost the entire area, with only Nicholas, along with portions of Fayette, Greenbrier, and Pocahontas Counties, in a Moderate drought.

Tomorrow will be an almost summerlike day around the area with warm temperatures and scattered showers. I say almost because it will be a few degrees cooler than it would be during the summer, and we’ll see some pop-up showers but no storms as we might typically see on a summer afternoon. Highs will be near 80 degrees in most areas, and some locations (especially in the southwestern part of the state) will be well into the 80s.
Tomorrow night, a cool front will push into the area, and the chance for showers and storms rises into the likely category, especially on Saturday.
Some of the showers could have decent rain associated with them, and totals with this first system will be a small step in terms of drought relief. I expect around a half inch in some spots, with a shade more in places that pick up multiple rounds of rain. Highs on both weekend days will be held in check by the cloud cover and should generally be around 70 degrees.
Another, heavier round of rain is in the forecast early next week, associated with the continued active pattern that will send multiple storms in our direction. The strongest of these will be on Tuesday, and areas to our west will once again be under the gun for severe storms, as they have been so regularly over the past couple of weeks.
With the next rounds of rain, some areas will see more than one inch of rain – a nice start to working on the drought, although still not enough.
Highs will be in the mid-to-upper 60s, cooler than early in the forecast but close to the normal as we end April.
