GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – As the 100th State Fair of West Virginia came to a close, the Draft Horse Pull drew massive crowds on August 15, 2025, to experience the incredible tradition.
The horses’ strength and skill were showcased in this thrilling display.
“The gentle giants are very therapeutic to be around, and to watch them pull the weight,” said Haskell & Catterton Pulling Team Partner Gina Sheehi. “They’re pulling more than what they weigh together. It’s amazing what they can do, and then just being a part of it.”
There’s such nostalgia for the West Virginia State Fair Draft Horse Pull and the history it represents.
“They are huge, magnificent animals, and it’s exciting to see them pull,” West Virginia Department of Agriculture Communications Director Beth Southern said. So WVDA Commissioner Leonhardt is here; he’ll be on hand to hand out trophies. We’re just always happy to support it, and it’s one of our favorite events of the fair.”
After growing up attending the horse pull with her grandparents, being back at the 100th State Fair is special for Alyssa All.
“They’re just beautiful, calm; amazingly, the horses can pull that much weight,” said the Catawba, Virginia resident. “It’s awesome to watch them and see how amazing they are. So I’ve kind of passed the tradition down, and I bring my kids every year.”
Horse pulls showcase the incredible strength and teamwork of draft horses.
“I’ve got a bunch of rescue horses, but I just love the power from these big guys; they’re beautiful,” Horse Enthusiast Samantha Comer said, adding that she loves being at the Draft Horse Pull for many reasons. “Sportsmanship that keeps going on with community involvement, just seeing the horses, and (continuing) to be a big part of the culture around here.”
