Don’t test your luck this St. Patrick’s Day

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Saint Patrick’s Day is Tuesday, March 17, and the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program wants to remind you not to drink and drive.

According to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired driving remains a primary factor in holiday fatalities.

Between 2019 and 2023, nearly 38% of all traffic fatalities during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday involved a drunk driver.

During the 2023 holiday alone, 63 people were killed in drunk driving crashes.

The Fayetteville Police Department says it will be out patrolling on St. Patrick’s day, and encourages people to celebrate, but to do so safely.
