Mullens, WV (WOAY) A decision is pending on who will provide electric service to a new school under construction in Wyoming County.
Appalachian Power Company is asking state regulators for permission to supply electricity to the new Mullens Elementary and Middle School.
According to the request, the school’s superintendent specifically approached Appalachian Power to provide service.
However, another utility, Black Diamond Power, currently serves customers in that area and has an existing agreement with the Wyoming County Board of Education.
Despite that, attorneys say Black Diamond does not object to Appalachian Power taking on the project, though the existing service agreement would still need to be addressed.
Appalachian Power argues its request follows state precedent, which prioritizes the customer’s preference when avoiding duplicate service.
The company is asking the Public Service Commission (PSC) to decide in time to allow service to be in place by May 1.
Officials say they are prepared to move forward with the necessary work once approval is granted.
